School of Arts and Humanities  Academic Recruitment Process  

Background  

In October 2018 the Council of the School approved a paper proposing changes to the School’s non-professorial academic recruitment process in order to implement the “Joint Report of the Council and General Board on arrangements for academic recruitment” (https://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/reporter/2017-18/weekly/6496/section5.shtml).   

 Following the first year of operation of the new guidance (AY 2018-19), the Head of School convened a working group to review the new arrangements and other aspects of academic recruitment. The working group’s recommendations for amendment and reform of academic recruitment were approved by the Council of the School in June 2019 (CSAH19.52)  

The School’s Recruitment Process was reviewed during Easter Term 2021. Feedback was received from Chairs of Faculty, Faculty Managers, members of the School’s Standing Academic Recruitment Panel (SARP), and the School Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Forum (CSAH.21.59 and CSAH.21.60).  

The guidance provided here reflects the feedback and recommendations recieved. The main Recruitment Process document is based on the General Board’s Joint Report on Academic Recruitment, with appendices to reflect more detailed processes and guidance. 

The process is in accordance with the Joint Report and adheres to the Recruitment Key Principles, subject to the detailed guidance set out below. The Council of the School shall determine the process, and the responsibility for overseeing compliance with that process shall rest with the Head of School.
