Award winning writer will oversee Artificial Intelligence research collaboration

Dr Stephen Cave joins as Executive Director of the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence.

He will manage the new interdisciplinary research centre, announced in December, which will bring together computer scientists, philosophers, and social scientists to examine the technical, practical and philosophical questions artificial intelligence raises for humanity in the coming century.

Dr Cave is a philosopher, diplomat, and writer who has covered a wide range of subjects including the future of artificial intelligence. He earned his PhD in philosophy from Cambridge, where he also taught, before joining the British Foreign Office as a policy advisor, overseeing a range of international negotiations.

He was First Secretary (Europe) at the British Embassy in Berlin and also worked at the German Foreign Ministry, representing Germany in the EU. His book Immortality was aNew Scientist book of the year in 2012 and he has written for wide range of media publications and appeared on many international television and radio programmes.

Dr Cave joins today and his first role will be to oversee the set-up of the research centre, which launches formally in October.

Professor Huw Price, Bertrand Russell Professor of Philosophy and Academic Director of the Centre for the Future of Intelligence, said: "I am delighted to welcome Stephen to the team. He has a remarkable range of talents and experience, all of which are going to be very valuable to our centre. I am especially excited by his international experience. Making the best of artificial intelligence is a challenge for us all and it is crucial that it is discussed at a global level."
