The European Union recently announced its AI Act Scientific Panel, and 3 of them are Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence staff members: Seán Ó hÉigeartaigh, Lorenzo Pacchiardi, and José Hernández-Orallo.
The panel is a group of 60 experts who advise the AI Office and national authorities on the implementation the AI Act and assessment of the impacts and risks of General-Purpose AI (GPAI) models.
The selected experts contribute with their expertise across a broad range of areas, including GPAI capability evaluation, risk assessment methodologies, technical risk mitigations, misuse/deployment risks, cyber offence risks, provider cybersecurity, emergent systemic risks, and compute measurement.
Besides ensuring top-tier expertise, the selection also considered geographic balance (at most 3 nationals from each country) and gender balance, giving preference to the underrepresented gender when candidates were equally qualified.
The experts are appointed to the panel for a 24-month term, renewable, in personal capacity. Most experts work in academia, while others work in organisations linked to the public sector, independent research, or civil society.
